THE DEEP SOUTH REGIONAL WORKSHOP FOR STUDENTS, POSTDOCS, AND EARLY STAGE INVESTIGATORS INTERESTED IN SEXUAL & GENDER MINORITY HEALTH RESEARCH

WHO: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office (SGMRO) and the Deep South Initiative for Advancing Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) Health Research within the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health are pleased to invite you to participate in an upcoming Regional Workshop in the Deep South on SGM Health Research.

WHAT: The goals of the Regional Workshop are to increase understanding of the NIH structure and processes, develop mentoring relationships within the extramural research community, enhance capacity to conduct SGM research, and provide researchers with the opportunity to interact with NIH staff, community members, and established researchers in SGM health. This year’s regional workshop also seeks to build capacity for researchers of SGM health in the deep south.

Deadline to register for this workshop is COB on March 29, 2024 or until capacity is met.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 9, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Reception and Networking: 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Spaces for the pre- and post-workshop activities are limited to the first 50 who sign up and a waitlist will follow!

Pre-workshop activity (afternoon before the conference) 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8th – Join us for our "Civil Rights & Conference Kickoff." Visit historic landmarks to learn how Alabama’s pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement influences the contemporary risk, resilience, and resistance of our sexual and gender minority communities today. Followed by an opening reception with our friends at ADIOS. (Note: Activity is sponsored by UAB and are free for participants – NIH appropriated funds will not be used for this activity)

Post-workshop activity (morning following the conference) 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10th – Join us for "Coffee in the Cafeteria." Come visit the Magic City Acceptance Academy – on of the only LGBTQ-affirming 6-12 grade schools in the country. Meet faculty, students, and staff to learn more about how the school supports Alabama’s youth to not just survive but thrive. (Note: Activity is sponsored by UAB and are free for participants – NIH appropriated funds will not be used for this activity)
