This workshop will cover the state of the art in renal imaging and advances from other research communities. The combined expertise of the communities to be invited offers a platform to evaluate spatial and physiologic characteristics of adult and pediatric human patients with or at risk of developing kidney disease. In particular, techniques to evaluate nephron number and function throughout the life course, from neonates, through pediatric, to adult and geriatric stages are necessary. Additionally, noninvasive imaging of fibrosis or other physiological or pathophysiological processes are needed to monitor disease course and response to therapies. Toward future clinical use, we will also hear about FDA qualification of imaging biomarkers and other translational challenges in imaging.

This workshop will ultimately recommend targeted research programs to optimize and advance research in kidney imaging, with a focus on spatial and physiologic characterization, as well as evaluation of glomerular filtration rate and functioning nephron number.
