Clean and safe water is vital to maintaining human health, our environment, and our economy. Numerous factors affect both access to and use of this resource, including climate change, energy costs, and policy. These factors present an opportunity for the water technology marketplace to provide new and innovative solutions that meet the needs of water suppliers, users, regulators, and stewards.

Purpose
This workshop will identify major challenges and technology needs faced by the different water sectors nationally and internationally. Municipal water utilities from Dayton, Cincinnati, and Northern Kentucky will also provide a regional perspective on technology needs to highlight the local marketplace for innovation and its connection to national challenges and sector needs.

Goal
The goal of this workshop is to provide information that:
  • The innovation community (researchers, small companies, investors, etc.) can use to target its technology research, development, and commercialization efforts
  • The regional Water Technology Innovation Cluster can use to inform and target its development and to select topics for follow-on meetings.
This workshop will be the first in a series of meetings to spur public and private innovation across water sectors and build understanding of innovation drivers. It will introduce complex issues such as the nexuses between policy and technology, energy and water, and innovation and commercialization discussed through the lenses of utilities, corporations, venture capitalists, and the research community. This event will be followed by smaller, more targeted workshops that focus on specific technology or individual challenge areas of mutual interest, such as water and energy, water reuse, green infrastructure, water and agriculture, policy and technology, and industrial water use.

This workshop is hosted by the U.S. EPA and the tri-state Water Technology Innovation Cluster.
