Additional Comments:
Where do you usually look to find Fellowship Opportunities, and, specifically, where did you find the STAR/GRO Fellowship announcement?
Please read the following background material and then answer the two essay questions at the end. We will use your responses in planning future STAR Fellowship events.

Fellowship Conferences have traditionally been held annually (more recently, every 2 years), have lasted 3 days, and have focused on generic topics. Some students have complained about the impact of the events on their schedules, the drain on their expense budgets, and the repetitive nature of the events from year to year. In addition, the events have been costly to the Fellowship program, and travel arrangements, especially for West Coast students, have been difficult.

The past 10 years have ushered in a new era of mass communication. Blackberries are no longer a fruit. The Internet, with Google, Twitter, and Web sites such as Facebook, has facilitated long-distance communication. Webinars and improved conference calls are increasingly substituting for extensive travel to scientific meetings.

It has been proposed that in place of the traditional large, physical meetings, we could schedule periodic focused webinar discussion groups tailored to smaller groups of students within specific disciplines. This approach would not only be less expensive and more convenient for students and the Fellowship program but also might allow a wider group of scientific experts, from within and outside EPA, to participate. We believe that this approach could provide a stimulating mix of participants whom we have not been able to attract in the past because their schedules would not allow them to travel to Washington.
Essay Questions
Does the value of meeting face-to-face with other STAR Fellows at our current meetings far outweigh the costs to you in terms of time and money? Please feel free to propose approaches other than those mentioned above and to include comments relevant to your personal situation.
2) How could we best morph to more specific topic-focused events such as conference calls or webinars? Can you suggest other creative approaches that would meet our collective needs?
Thank you for taking the time and thought to respond to these essay questions. We sincerely hope that you have a safe trip back to your school.
