Workshop on Behavioral Methodologies

March 18-20, 2007

NIH Neuroscience Center
6001 Research Boulevard
North Bethesda, MD 20850

Sponsors
National Cancer Institute
Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research
Kellogg Health Scholars Program

Co-Chairs:
Karen Emmons, Ph.D., Harvard School of Public Health/ Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Eliseo J. Pιrez -Stable, M.D., University of California at San Francisco

Purpose: The purpose of this workshop is to provide intensive training in behavioral research methodology to investigators from racial/ethnic groups, from disadvantaged backgrounds, or who have disabilities. Promising scientists with limited grant experience (i.e., have not been a PI on a National Institutes of Health R01 funded grant) have been selected to participate in this meeting. The overall goal of this meeting is to improve the diversity of the research workforce by increasing the research skills of underrepresented groups with interests in behavioral science and cancer research. The NIH expects efforts to diversify the workforce to lead to the recruitment of the most talented researchers from all groups; to improve the quality of the educational and training environment; to balance and broaden the perspective in setting research priorities; to improve the ability to recruit subjects from diverse backgrounds into clinical research protocols; and to improve the Nation's capacity to address and eliminate health disparities. A secondary goal is to provide networking opportunities (via a listserv and an in-person meeting) for promising investigators and more experienced behavioral researchers.
